Rare Marine Treat on Symbiartic

For the month of September over on Symbiartic, the art+science blog on the Scientific American Blog Network, my co-blogger and I decided to present a different example of science-art every day.

Today is Craig Dylke's beautiful, quiet, floating-in-blue, A Rare Marine Treat.

Feathered Problems... The Gallery is up but can you see it?

Howdy folks...

The gallery has been up a while now, but we've got no comments on it. This combined with a major site formatting issue I encounter with the post (I lose the whole right sidebar) and the fact my blog feed hasn't shown the gallery as posted leads me to suspect there is a malfunction.

In good news I think this problem is caused by the absolute sheer volume of awesomeness that is the gallery (though I suspect the number of picture files rather than awesomeness is causing the problem). If you could leave us a comment here or on the gallery post if you are having similar issues so we can approach blogger about solutions.

So check out the gallery either here, or by refreshing the blog. It exists, I'm just not sure people can see it on feeds and the like. Please also help spread the word if you could...

More birds (well Feathered Dinos) than you can throw a stone at...

Who knew that Feathered Dinosaurs would be so immensely popular? (Well actually me and Peter had a hunch :P)

The number of submissions is absolutely staggering, and frankly a bit of an honour for us to receive. Feathered Dinosaurs is definitely going to be one of the all time biggest Time Capsules in ART Evolved history, if not THE biggest!

The only downside is that it is turning into a real task to organize and format all this art so that it is labelled and linked properly. So as you may have noticed we didn't quite make the deadline for posting the gallery of this weekend that we had been aiming for. We are very sorry about that, but we assure you it will be worth it (our current estimates have this gallery at 60+ pieces!!!)...

So please stay tuned later this week, as we hope to get it all put together for your viewing pleasure as soon as possible!

Keep the Feathers coming!

Due to the amazing volume of submissions we've been receiving for the Feathered Dinosaur gallery we're extending the deadline to February 4th (we need a little more time to properly upload and link all the submissions). So you have a little bit of extra time to create a piece for this palaeo-art extravaganza!

Remember we accept any and all artwork submitted that is themed around any of our gallery topics. Just send your submission(s), along with any accompanying text you'd like with them, and the link to your website/blog/online picture gallery to our email artevolved@gmail.com, and we'll post them!

The Dan Varner Tribute Gallery

After several people making the same good suggestion of us abandoning a specific creature topic for a our Dan Varner tribute gallery, we are giving in to common sense.

Thank you to everyone who voted, however this poll's results will not be taken into consideration for the May gallery. Though don't despair as in the end you will be able to create whichever creature for the gallery you want.

We are proud to announce the official format of the Dan Varner gallery will be any piece of art you see fitting as paying tribute to the departed great Dan Varner. It is suggested that your piece be themed toward Mesezioc sealife, as that was Mr. Varner's biggest impact within palaeoart the past two decades (but you can stray from this if you choose to). You can find examples of his artwork throughout Mike Everhart's excellent website Oceans of Kansas.

If you're new to the site, we accept any and all artwork submitted that is themed around any of our gallery topics. Just send your submission(s), along with any accompanying text you'd like with them, and the link to your website/blog/online picture gallery to our email artevolved@gmail.com, and we'll post them!

Dan Varner Tribute Gallery

With the passing of palaeoart great Dan Varner, and us needing a new Gallery topic for 2012's second gallery in May, we (Craig and Peter) thought a tribute to a departed great would be a fitting theme.

As of such we're holding a poll themed around the topics Mr. Varner famously brought back from deep time for a Dan Varner tribute gallery.

Please vote.

Also don't forget the Feathered Dinosaur gallery at the end of this month.

The Relaunch Gallery: Feathered Dinosaurs!

The votes are in, and you the people have spoken.

It was a tight race. The win was by a mere two votes. Still a win is a win and given the new reality of AE's administrators all having less time these days, it has been decided.

ART Evolved will be cutting back the time capsule galleries from every 2 months to every 3. So that is sadly a lose of 2 galleries, but hopefully the quantity and quality in the four increases with the extra time in between galleries to create more and/or better art.

So we will as of 2012 be holding galleries every February, May, August, and November of each year. We have tried to tailor these to avoid common busy times of the year as best we can (the Northern Hemisphere's summer is a tough one to avoid outright though). Let us know you're thoughts.

So our relaunch gallery in February of 2012 will be the Feathered Dinosaur gallery. While that sounds like it is ages away, it is actually in only another 3.5 months! Be sure to take advantage of this extra time! Also please help us spread the word about this gallery and the new schedule...

If you're new to the site, we accept any and all artwork submitted that is themed around any of our gallery topics. Just send your submission(s), along with any accompanying text you'd like with them, and the link to your website/blog/online picture gallery to our email artevolved@gmail.com, and we'll post them!

ART Evolved's Galleries...

In theory the Forest Gallery is supposed to go up in 2ish weeks, and yet we haven't formally talked about at all... Oops

I sincerely apologize to any people really excited about this potential theme. I didn't mean to kill this gallery with neglect. Hopefully my excuse of moving to Hong Kong at the start of September (with 4 days notice) and jumping into a full time teaching position the day after arriving is sufficient excuse (Peter Bond has an equally valid excuse of acquiring his own full time teaching gig a week later!).

These delays may sadly be the new status quo on ART Evolved. We have been trying to juggle this site with our new heavy duty work loads, but sadly the work takes priority.

Now I don't bring this up to say ART Evolved is finished (far from it). Nor are we planning to pack in the galleries anytime soon.

I just see this as a great chance to discuss people's thoughts on how we've been running the galleries the past 3 years, and whether we wanted to shift the timing or frequency of them. (I note for example at least two of our previous November galleries had severe delays and schedule disruptions).

Do you think ART Evolved should stick to the six galleries every two months. Or should we make it four galleries every three months? Should we simply reschedule a few galleries to less busy times of the year?

In the immediate future we have two options. One we could carry on with a forest themed gallery, and simply push the due date to later. OR we could drop it, and go for the special end of year gallery Bond and myself came up with in the spring (your only hint is Dinosaurs and feathers... :P)

Comment Moderation Moderated :P

Given the recent hot topics we've been hosting this month there's been a lot of discussion. Sadly for non-members their comments have been getting caught up in our moderation. As we haven't had any spam for a while, we're once again going to try limiting comment moderation on ART Evolved to older posts.

So enjoy free commenting everyone! (With a warning if we start getting spammed again this moderation could go back up...)

NEWS FLASH - Pixar Dinosaur Movie Announced

This just in (two days ago):  Pixar has announced it's next four movies - Brave, Monster University, an Untitled Pixar Film about Dinosaurs, and an Untitled Pixar Film that Takes Place in Your Mind!

They specifically say,

"What if the cataclysmic asteroid that forever changed life on Earth actually missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? This hilarious, heartfelt and original tale is directed by Bob Peterson (co-director/writer, "Up;" writer, "Finding Nemo") and produced by John Walker ("The Incredibles," "The Iron Giant")."

Cool, right?  Let's hope it's similar to the first 5 minutes of Disney's Dinosaur (2000)...

Also, Ted Moskovich has created this homage to Allan Grant's speech from Jurassic Park!

Winner of the Run-off Poll and this September's Gallery!

Thanks to everyone who participated in one or both of our polls for the fall gallery. With the first vote tying and the second one being a near dead heat, a topic has finally emerged...

The turtles! With over 200 million years worth of the hard shelled reptiles to draw upon (pun intended :P), from both the land and sea there should be no shortage of diversity this September!

If you're new to the site, we accept any and all artwork submitted that is themed around any of our gallery topics. Just send your submission(s), along with any accompanying text you'd like with them, and the link to your website/blog/online picture gallery to our email artevolved@gmail.com, and we'll post them!

September Poll is up!

On our right sidebar you'll find our potential themes to vote on.

Which will you pick? (You can pick more than one at a time, by the way)

There is a theme, but we admins think it is more fun in this case to make you figure it out ;)

Upcoming Gallery

So this alert is a bit overdue (I have a good excuse... I was kind of getting married).

In case you missed the results of our last poll the Carboniferous won. Meaning...

This July 1st, anything and everything from the Carboniferous period is fair game for its own work of art!

If you're new to the site, we accept any and all artwork submitted that is themed around any of our gallery topics. Just send your submission(s), along with any accompanying text you'd like with them, and the link to your website/blog/online picture gallery to our email artevolved@gmail.com, and we'll post them!

Failed Experiment- Comment Moderation Back in Effect

Just a quick update on a sadly too shortly lived experiment here on ART Evolved. During the whole Gregory Paul Email discussions there were many non-members who complained their comments were being delayed by our moderation. As this was a valid complaint we decided to try delaying comment moderation for a couple days... Sadly a mere two weeks after we launched this delay trial, we have already received some X rated spam. So unfortunately that spells an end to this experiment. So once again we aplogize to our non-member readers for possible delays in your contributions to our discussions, but we hope you understand.

Two New Blogs enter the Paleoblogoshere!

A HUGE welcome to the paleoblogsphere goes out to two new blogs:

Quick Reminders

There certainly has been a lot going on here on ART Evolved and the greater Palaeo-art world this past month. Between lots of new members added to our roster and a bunch of inflammatory emails by a certain celebrity Palaeo-artist it is not surprising we've been busy lately. Amongst all the hustle and bustle we thought a quick reminder would be good, as there are a few things coming up real soon on the ART Evolved agenda. The most urgent (in that it has a deadline) is the Hadrosaur gallery at the end of the month. Please try to throw together a Duckbill Dinosaur of some sort for May. 1st. We accept any and all submissions. Just fire them off to us at artevolved@gmail.com. Secondly we just wanted to remind people that we are still looking for submissions for our team up with Ask a Biologist. They are looking for promotional material to help spread the word about their site. We here at ART Evolved think this is a fantastic web based initiative and it needs our help. So please consider creating something they can use to advertise their site!

Summer Gallery poll is up!

With the many new and exciting changes occurring here on ART Evolved (if you look closely amongst this week's posts you might notice a few of them :P) we thought it'd be a good time to figure out what gallery will follow our upcoming Hadrosaur gallery.

As this next, yet to be determined, gallery will fall in the summer we thought the topic should be a little more optional so you might decide to spend some of your holiday time making a piece for our show.

You'll notice how you have a choice between several different time periods and/or palaeo-environments. Anything that would fit within the winning topic's general description is a go.

So have fun picking a general topic that gives you the freedom to do a piece while not quite feeling like a chore ;)

ps- or for our Southern Hemisphere friends this will be a nice way to kill those short unfun winter days... At least I hope it will help. I personally will be down that way myself around then!

ART Evolved's Ask a Biologist Initiative!

A little while ago, Dave Hone of the Archosaur Musings came to us asking a favour:  Would the ART Evolved Community be able to help out Ask a Biologist with the creation of some free advertising materials?  Posters and blog icons with images of animals, plants, and fossils - all sporting the Ask a Biologist logo?

Of course I said no, but then Craig smacked me in the head with a Papo Pachyrhinosaur and reminded me what an awesome website and useful resource Ask a Biologist is!  If you haven't been before, drop everything and go.  NOW!  Wouldn't you like to know how accurate is "Primeval" is?  Is it possible for dinosaur DNA to be preserved?  Bear vs Lion - who would win?!?

What Dave and us would love to see is Ask a Biologist gaining popularity with kids and within schools, and becoming a more commonly used resource!  Can you help us with this?

So the challenge goes out to create media that captures what Ask a Biologist is all about.  They are looking for:
  • posters - A4 or 8.5x11 sizes, easy to distribute digitally or print, so teachers can pin up!
  • blog icons - side bar-sized or post-sized, easy to upload and eye-catching!

As long as the logo and the website (below) are included, anything goes!  Portrait or landscape.  Dinosaurs, horses, lions, ants, trees. Add some questions and answers.  Collage, photos, digital, paint, whatever!  Examples of what Dave is sort of looking for can be seen on Ask a Biologist's facebook group. But we, as ART Evolvians, can do better!

One more thing: artists are welcome to add their names / websites to their posters if they want (though obviously not too big so that the main Ask a Biologist message gets through! ;-)  Artists should also recognise that all artwork submitted will be distributed online and in the real world, so you may not want to put their most prized work out there!

All work sent in (to artevolved@gmail.com) will be posted here on ART Evolved, as well as online with Ask a Biologist so that people can pick and use whichever posters and icons they like!  Join the Ask a Biologist Initiative!

USEFUL INFO

The website for Ask a Biologist is www.askabiologist.org.uk

The font used in the Ask a Biologist logo is Myriad Pro Black and Myriad Pro Bold.

Below are several logos to download and use in your posters:

Thanks so much for supporting Ask a Biologist!  I can't wait to see what you come up with!  Questions can be addressed in the comment section.  Awesome!
